Timing chain sprockets

A sprocket (or a timing gear) converts the linear movement of the chain into a rotatory motion of the component to which it is attached. In the camshaft system, it is responsible for the acceleration of the crankshaft, camshafts, balance shafts, the oil pump and other engine accessories. In many cases, it is also a part of the valve timing adjusters. The increasingly powerful engines require more and more strength from the driving pulley. On the other hand, the focus is unfortunately - on reducing the production costs as well as on the maximum reduction of the weight of parts, which is a significant obstacle when designing them. Today, practically every sprocket is manufactured by the Powder Metallurgy method, which, despite high repeatability and high efficiency, often results in low strength. Why is that? Mainly because the parts obtained using the mentioned method are porous and brittle. Especially, when the control of the production process isn’t very precise. The teeth in such sprockets can break off and wear off, leading to chain breakage and timing failures.

Durable engine timing sprockets

MEHENKER decided to build it’s sprockets with proven methods. For the production, it uses high-quality steel, which is subjected to precise machining. Then the teeth are going through the surface hardening processes -  at the predicted point of the highest load. As a result, they are resistant to abrasion while maintaining the soft core of the tooth. This approach guarantees low brittleness and minimizes the risk of damage. The entire process is controlled by special measuring machines that ensure that the shape of the teeth made corresponds to the current standards. Thanks to this, the company can guarantee that the durability of their products is at the highest possible level.
